学生	老师，这是我最后的成果。能否帮我看看？[发送附件] ST: 英国最大的广告和公关集团WWP集团近日在英国议会下议院发布《中国梦的力量与潜力》调查报告。报告认为，中国人的个人梦与国家梦紧密交织，“中国梦”的吸引力未来可超越“美国梦”。 TT: The WWP, the advertising and public relations giant in Britain, recently released its research report, the Power and Potential of the Chinese Dream, at the House of Commons. The report said China's personal and national dreams were interdependent, and the appeal of the Chinese Dream was greater than that of the American Dream to the Americans.
老师	[收到附件。阅读。对译文比较满意，但也发现一些问题。]拼写还得心细一些，如‘WPP集团’不能写成‘WWP集团’。
学生	哦，对不起。
老师	标点符号是同学们容易失分的地方，如《中国梦的力量与潜力》的TT （The Power and Potential of the Chinese Dream）少了书名号。
学生	哦，对不起，忘了加下划线。
学生	老师，我又有个问题想请教您。在您发的邮件里，书写时的书名都没有对“the”划下划线，所以 the 就不用了吗?
老师	‘The’ 如果是封面有的，就划线， 如 The Story of the Stone (《红楼梦》)。如果是在引述中由引述者因句法的缘故补加的，不是原来封面上固有的，这个冠词就不包括在书名里，不划底线或用斜体。
学生	那‘the Power and Potential of the Chinese Dream’这个书名中呢？因为我也不知道原文有没有加‘the’。
老师	在这个书名中，‘The’ 应该大写，因为是书中标题的第一个字，不同于 句中的‘the Chinese Dream' 等等 普通名称。因此，正确的书名应该如此：The Power and Potential of the Chinese Dream。（记者出手很快，也有疏忽的时候。我自己虽然专攻语言，有时在很短的时间里要编写大量的教学资料，没有助手，校对也会有不够过细的时候。但是，无论是谁的错，错了就错了，就得改正。）
老师	另外，如果要你把‘六成中国人’译成英文，能不能举一反三？
学生	‘60 percent of the Chinese’。
老师	对。也要记住：‘the Chinese’= ‘Chinese people’; ‘Chinese’= ‘the Chinese language’。以此类推，‘the French’= ‘French people’; ‘French’= ‘the French language’。我怕自己讲混，同学记混，（现在太忙乱，没有校对时间，如果我的资料打错了，请以此为准！）特别提醒一下，大家一定要搞清定冠词在这儿有或是没有，所表达的 senses 和 references 是有很大的区别的。切记！
学生	好的。
老师	‘10年后中国可以获得与美国比肩的影响力’中，‘十年后’在句首。这是 a periodic sentence 还是a loose sentence? ST: 10年后中国可以获得与美国比肩的影响力。 TT: China would equal the United States in power in the coming 10 years.
学生	loose。
老师	错。
学生	啊，是一个 a periodic sentence. ‘In order to live, I eat’是 a periodic sentence (不带尾巴的句子)。'I eat in order to live' 则是 a loose sentence (动词后面带了尾巴，带了修饰语)。
老师	那么，‘China would equal the United States in power in the coming 10 years’中，‘in the coming 10 years’ 在后面，这是 a periodic sentence 还是一个 a loose sentence 呢?
学生	是a loose sentence。
老师	为什么中文用a periodic sentence, 而英文用 a loose sentence 呢? 关于这个问题，在讲语法的语序时，在讲 hypotactic sentence 时候，在好几个场合，我讲过几次。你还记得吗?
学生	因为英文中把重点都放在前面。中文是 修辞语 放在 被修饰语 前,西文是 theme 放在 rheme 前。修饰语不是主要的。
老师	不错！我再问你：如果要你翻译‘再过两个月，我就要毕业了’，下面哪个语序最好？ (a) In two months, I will graduate. (b) I'll graduate in two months.
学生	‘再过两个月’是时间状语，时间状语是谓语动词的修饰语，在中文句子里自然须放在前面。相反，译成英文时，除非我要强调‘in two months （再过两个月）’的概念而把它放在句子中‘theme’ 的位置上，我则应该把‘in two months ’放在‘rheme’部分。因此，我应该采用 (b) 句。
老师	不错！
